Water is regarded as hard when it contains a high level of minerals especially calcium and magnesium. It is important to know if your tap water contains hard water. Common signs of hard water include limescale, soap scum, residues on kitchen utensils after washing, rusty colors in toilets etc.

Hard water makes you spend more on soap and detergents and could cause damage to your plumbing system, bathroom, and kitchen appliances. To cut down the gas and electricity bill incurred by hard water, installing a water softener is recommended.

If you want to find out whether your tap water is hard or if your new water softener works, you can do so by performing a simple soap test. All you need are three items; a glass of tap water, a glass of table water (which is soft water) and a bottle of liquid soap.

Follow These Steps To Perform A Soap Test –

  • Fill one glass with tap water and place it on a table or kitchen cabinet.
  • Fill the other glass with table water which is safe to drink and usually soft water. Place it beside the other glass if tap water.
  • Pour a few drops of the liquid soap into the glass filled with table water. You will notice that it doesn’t change color or become forms any lather. Instead, it maintains its crystal-clear composition. This shows that it is soft water.
  • Now, pour a few drops into the glass filled with tap water and wait a while to notice any changes. If your tap water is hard, there will be a reaction between the soap and the hard water causing it to form a white precipitate (cloud-like formation) which settles on the glass surface.
  • If your tap water exhibits a similar action to table water which forms no precipitate, then you will know your tap water is soft, and your water softener is active. If it shows a white precipitate, then its hard water and your water softener is probably faulty.

There Are Two Solutions To Hard Water –

  • If you don’t have a water softener, then you need to buy and install one in your plumbing system. Hard water is unsafe to drink and unpleasant to use; don’t delay installing one for your home. • If there is a problem with your water softener, then you should call the customer care and report the situation. If it reoccurs then consider purchasing a water softener from another manufacturer.

If you are looking to buy a water filter, it is very important to understand how they work, the types of water systems in the market, their pros, and cons. You can only gather this information by researching online. The following are 4 different types of water heaters that you can buy in your home:

a. Activated carbon filters

These water filters are also known as pre-filters or carbon filters and they remove large particles like silt or sediments from the water. These filters work by attracting, absorbing and removing particles before the water gets out of the faucet. In fact, these filters use their activated carbon to filter these sediments from the water. The filtered water will taste much better and will have no odor because these filters remove chlorine and other contaminants from the water.

b. Reverse osmosis

This type of water filter is very popular because it has the ability to remove all the contaminants that might be in the water. This makes the filtered water clear and odorless because these filters rely on reverse osmosis to remove all the contaminants.

c. Alkaline or water ionizers

These filters use the electrolysis process to remove contaminants. The process involves passing the water over plates that are electrically charged but separated into two streams. One of the streams is acidic while the other one is acidic to help with the electrolysis process. The water not only gets softer but also pure and less acidic. If you use less acidic water, your skin becomes soft and hydrated because there is less acid and your skin won’t lose a lot of water.

d. UV Filters

These are among the newest technologies in the market because they rely on ultraviolet radiation to filter water. When UV light is used to treat water, there is a high chance that harmful bacteria will be eliminated and the water will be free from disease-causing microorganisms. This is among the most environmentally friendly filters because it does not rely on chemicals or additional heat to be effective.

These are among the best water filters you can have in your home. However, your choice can be determined by your preference, budget, and knowledge about water filters. You need to read online reviews and comments to understand more about these water filters before buying or investing in any of them.
